White Water Rafting — Wairoa River

ThrillingSeasonal

The Wairoa River offers some of the best white water rafting in the North Island, with Grade 5 rapids when the dam releases. Operators run guided trips from Tauranga — the season runs roughly October to April. For a gentler experience, the Kaituna River near Rotorua offers Grade 4 rapids through native forest including a world-famous 7-metre waterfall drop.

Riverbug is a unique solo inflatable craft that lets you navigate the Kaituna River rapids at water level. More intimate than group rafting — you're right in the action. Guided trips depart from Rotorua and include all equipment and instruction. A fantastic option for those who want something more adventurous than kayaking but don't want to commit to full white water.
