Kākāpō Return to Waikato Ecosanctuary as Wētā Also Move In

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari in Waikato is celebrating the addition of five kākāpō. This increase is part of a mainland habitat trial that commenced in 2023.

The introduction of these kākāpō marks an important step in conservation efforts at the ecosanctuary. This trial aims to establish a viable mainland habitat for these critically endangered birds. Alongside the kākāpō, the sanctuary is also home to the Mahoenui giant wētā, further enriching its biodiversity.

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is dedicated to restoring the natural environment and providing a safe habitat for native species. The successful integration of kākāpō into this ecosystem offers hope for their species recovery and showcases the value of conservation initiatives.

Visitors to the sanctuary can observe these unique species and learn more about the conservation work being done. The efforts at Sanctuary Mountain highlight the ongoing commitment to preserving New Zealand's unique wildlife for future generations.
