Mozambique Establishes Conservation Area for Butterfly Species

Mozambique has announced the creation of the Mount Mabu Community Conservation Area. The decision protects an essential habitat home to over 200 butterfly species.

A government decree, published on August 24th, set aside 23,000 acres as the Mount Mabu Community Conservation Area. This area, known as one of the wettest regions in southern Africa, is often referred to as the 'butterfly forest.'

The conservation initiative aims to safeguard this unique ecosystem and its diverse butterfly population. Mount Mabu’s isolated mountain chain provides a vital habitat for these species, which face various environmental threats.

By establishing this protected area, Mozambique is taking significant steps towards environmental conservation and biodiversity preservation. This effort not only supports butterfly species but also contributes to the overall health of the local environment.
