Plans to Share Criminal Convictions with Partner Countries Shelved

New Zealand and its migration partner countries have decided to shelve plans to share citizens' criminal convictions. The proposal was first discussed in 2024 during a meeting of the criminal database checking group in Wellington.

The arrangement aimed to enhance collaboration on migration and security issues among the partner nations. However, the plan has faced delays and is currently on hold. Discussions around the benefits and implications of such a data-sharing initiative have not yielded a consensus among the involved countries.

The criminal database checking group was formed to improve practices around sharing important criminal information. It's intended to protect the integrity of immigration processes by flagging issues related to serious criminal records. Despite the initial enthusiasm, the challenges of implementing the scheme have led to its postponement for the time being.
