Environment Southland Denies Review for Datagrid AI Factory

Environment Southland has turned down a request for a review concerning the Datagrid AI factory project. This $5 billion development is currently being established at the Makarewa site.

The factory will require significant water resources, with consents allowing it to extract up to 600,000 litres of groundwater each day. The scale of the project has raised concerns among some community members, who were seeking a review of its environmental impact. Despite these concerns, Environment Southland remains committed to moving forward with the project as planned.
