Farmers to Face Levy Hike for NAIT Software Upgrade

Farmers will see an increase in levies for the National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) programme starting this week. This hike will help fund new software development for OSPRI and cover a $1.38 million undercollection.

The increase in levies marks a significant move to ensure better management and tracking of livestock in New Zealand. The funds raised will be directed towards implementing updated technology, which aims to enhance the efficiency of the mandatory tracing scheme.

Farmers have voiced concerns about the additional financial burden but recognise the importance of effective livestock tracing. The NAIT programme plays a crucial role in protecting the national herd and ensuring food safety.

The OSPRI initiative is expected to provide long-term benefits to the farming sector, supporting livestock health and the integrity of New Zealand’s agricultural exports. With these enhancements, farmers hope for smoother operations and improved compliance in the future.
