Government Investment Upgrades Visitor Facilities at Horopito

The Government is investing $405,000 to upgrade visitor facilities at Horopito on the Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono Great Ride. Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston announced that this initiative will enhance the experience for the over 67,000 visitors that pass through annually.

The funding will address the current lack of infrastructure in Horopito, which is located on the edge of Tongariro National Park. Key improvements include the construction of public toilets, safe shuttle access, and additional parking facilities.

This investment not only benefits visitors but also supports the local economy, ensuring that one of New Zealand's Great Rides continues to deliver a safe and enjoyable experience for all trail users. The project is set to begin soon, aiming to encourage longer stays in the region.

With growing visitor numbers, the upgrades will improve accessibility, safety, and visitor satisfaction, positioning Horopito as a key stop on the Great Ride for many years to come.
