Leopard Seal Sighted at Petone Beach in Lower Hutt

A leopard seal has captured the attention of beachgoers at Petone Beach in Lower Hutt. The Department of Conservation confirmed the seal came ashore on Saturday afternoon.

The appearance of the leopard seal attracted crowds, as many observers took the opportunity to see the marine mammal up close. The Department of Conservation cautioned people to keep a safe distance and not to disturb the seal while it rests on the beach.

Leopard seals are known for their distinctive spotted coats and can weigh up to 600 kilograms. They are typically found in the Antarctic, but occasional sightings in New Zealand waters are reported during the warmer months.

The Department expressed appreciation for the public's enthusiasm while reminding everyone of the importance of respecting wildlife and following safety guidelines.
