Over 53,000 Hunting Permits Issued via New Digital System

A new self-service online hunting permit system has issued more than 53,000 permits, exceeding expectations. The change has significantly reduced administrative work for the Department of Conservation.

Hunting and Fishing Minister James Meager announced that the new system has allowed nearly 10,000 more permits to be issued than initially predicted since its launch in late 2024. On average, 2,500 people each month are applying for permits online, reflecting a growing acceptance of the system among hunters.

Active permits have also increased by 10 per cent compared to two years ago, reaching 36,000. With the majority of permits—99.5 per cent—now issued through self-service, DOC staff can spend around 70 per cent less time on permit administration, allowing more time for conservation efforts.

These efficiencies have reportedly saved over $130,000 in resources. Additionally, the digital upgrades have streamlined hunting areas, reducing the number of open permit regions from 54 to eight, making it simpler for hunters to navigate their options.
