New bill improves targeting of welfare assistance

The Social Security (Jobseeker Support and Accommodation Supplement) Amendment Bill has passed its third reading in Parliament. This legislation aims to better direct financial assistance to those most in need while improving the welfare system's sustainability.

Social Development and Employment Minister Louise Upston stated that the changes reflect the Government's commitment to reducing benefit dependency and promoting employment. The new legislation expects young people not engaged in work, education, or training to receive financial support from their parents rather than taxpayers.

The updates to the Accommodation Supplement calculation are designed to ensure that support reaches those who need it most. Notably, the changes will not affect homeowners receiving New Zealand Superannuation, Veteran’s Pension, Supported Living Payment, or the Emergency Benefit that aligns with the Supported Living Payment. Additionally, the partners or spouses of these benefit recipients will also remain unaffected by the amendments.
