Government Invests in Agritech to Boost Apple Productivity

The Government is investing in a new research programme aimed at improving productivity and profits in the apple industry. Agriculture Minister Todd McClay announced the initiative at the Horticulture New Zealand Young Grower of the Year competition.

The project will utilise hyperspectral imaging technology to examine the internal conditions of apples during packing and storage. This innovative light-based scanning technique allows researchers to gain insights about fruit quality and internal defects without cutting into the fruit.

Mr McClay emphasized that better information could enable exporters to make informed decisions about storage and shipping, ultimately reducing waste and ensuring apples reach markets in peak condition.

The Government's investment amounts to $1.84 million from the Primary Sector Growth Fund, while Auckland-based agritech company Hectre will contribute the remaining funds, bringing the project total to $4.6 million over three years. Hectre already collects extensive data on apple size, colour, and quality, and this programme will expand their research to include internal aspects such as maturity and starch content.
