New Mental Health Facility Opens in Rotorua

A new acute mental health and addiction facility has opened at Rotorua Hospital. This 16-bed unit aims to provide faster support and enhance crisis response for people in the Lakes district.

Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey announced that the previous inpatient unit was over 45 years old and no longer met the needs of patients. The newly opened facility has increased bed availability from 14 to 16, ensuring more people can access the necessary support when they need it.

The modern facility features individual bedrooms, therapy and activity spaces, family areas, and internal courtyards. It includes quieter spaces for those who require a lower-stimulus environment, catering to diverse needs.

Mr Doocey emphasised the importance of the new facility for frontline workers, who provide vital support during difficult times. They require suitable facilities to effectively assist those in need.
