Govt to Keep Labour's Clean Car Standard for Imports

The Government has decided to retain the Clean Car Standard introduced by Labour for imported high-emissions vehicles. However, it has not determined what the new settings for the standard will be.

This move aims to ensure that imported vehicles continue to meet environmental standards. The Government has stated that it will work towards establishing settings that are 'realistic and achievable'.

The Clean Car Standard primarily targets reducing emissions from the transport sector, a key area for achieving New Zealand's climate goals. Although previous regulations were in place, adjustments will be necessary to address current challenges and technological advances.

Officials are expected to consult with stakeholders to shape the future of the standard and ensure its effectiveness in reducing vehicle emissions in Aotearoa. The timeline for finalising these new settings remains unclear at this stage.
