Government Moves Ahead with Solar Panel Review
The Government is set to implement recommendations from the Ministry for Regulation's Sector Review Report, aimed at simplifying solar panel installations in New Zealand. This initiative seeks to make residential and small to medium scale solar installations the easiest in the developed world.
Regulation Minister David Seymour highlighted the need for reliable and affordable energy for Kiwis. He noted that the approval process for solar panels currently takes months, and the new recommendations will streamline this process for families.
The Government will also legalise plug-in solar systems, making them available for renters and apartment dwellers who cannot use traditional rooftop solar. Seymour stated that if these systems are suitable for countries like Germany and the UK, they are good enough for New Zealand.
The Ministry's findings came after engaging with installers, regulators, and industry participants through the Red Tape Tipline. They discovered that getting approval for small-scale solar systems can involve multiple sign-offs, contributing to delays in installation.
