Emergency waste funding of $250,000 for five councils

Minister for the Environment Nicola Grigg has announced $250,000 in emergency waste funding for five councils affected by severe weather in January and February. This funding is aimed at supporting recovery efforts in these communities.

The funding will assist councils in various response activities. These include helping flood-affected communities dispose of damaged goods, clearing fallen trees in public areas, and facilitating temporary waste management operations.

This latest allocation is in addition to the $130,000 already provided to local authorities impacted by severe weather events in October 2025. The funding is part of a wider government initiative to recognise the financial challenges councils face during emergency situations.

In 2024, changes to the Waste Minimisation Act allowed the Waste Disposal Levy to be used for managing waste arising from such emergency events. The Government aims to ensure that councils can respond swiftly to health and environmental risks following severe weather incidents.
