Rotorua's New VoMo Factory Showcases Wood Processing Future

The future of value-added wood processing is looking bright with the opening of Red Stag's new VoMo factory in Rotorua. Forestry Minister Todd McClay attended the event, announcing a significant government investment.

The Government is backing the VoMo (Volumetric Modulation) project with a $3.2 million investment through the Primary Sector Growth Fund. This is complemented by Red Stag's $4.8 million, bringing the total investment to $8 million over three years.

Mr McClay emphasised New Zealand's reputation for producing some of the best timber globally. He outlined the potential of advanced timber construction to enhance productivity, shorten build times, and generate high-value wood products.

The Rotorua facility will focus on developing mass timber modules, which are pre-fabricated before being transported for quick assembly on-site. The project aims to assess the performance of these modular buildings in local conditions, including aspects like seismic resilience and commercial viability.

This initiative is expected to bolster the economy and increase demand for engineered wood products such as cross laminated timber.
