Sika Deer Designated as North Island's First Special Interest Herd

New Zealand's sika deer in the Kaimanawa and Kaweka Forest Parks have been designated as the North Island's first Herd of Special Interest. This decision aims to enhance management and hunting opportunities.

Hunting and Fishing Minister James Meager announced this significant move in Taupō. The designation will enable clearer management practices and foster better conservation outcomes for the sika deer population.

The Central North Island Sika Foundation will work alongside the Game Animal Council, DOC, iwi, and hapū in managing the herd. Meager emphasised the importance of hunter-led conservation, stating that this initiative allows hunters to sustainably harvest healthy animals while protecting biodiversity.

The Herd Management Plan focuses on maintaining existing animal numbers and prioritising environmental health. It acknowledges the Sika Foundation's ongoing dedication to improving the wellbeing of both the deer herd and their habitat.
