John Harbord Appointed Chair of Electricity Authority

John Harbord has been appointed as the new Chair of the Electricity Authority, effective immediately. Energy Minister Simeon Brown announced the appointment for a three-year term.

Harbord brings over 20 years of experience in engaging with senior leaders on complex policy and regulatory issues and is currently the executive director of the New Zealand Shipping Federation. He has stepped down from his role as Chair of the Major Electricity User’s Group to take on this new position.

Minister Brown stated the importance of the Electricity Authority in ensuring the electricity system meets the Government’s goals of providing abundant, affordable, and reliable electricity. He emphasised that electricity should support economic growth rather than hinder it.

The Minister expects Harbord to enhance the crucial regulatory role of the Electricity Authority, ensuring it delivers effectively for all New Zealanders.
