NZ Considers Joining Fiji-Australia Defence Alliance

New Zealand is exploring the possibility of joining the Ocean of Peace Alliance with Australia and Fiji. The Government confirms this initiative following a recent military alliance announcement between Fiji and Australia.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed support for the alliance, highlighting the close military bond shared with Australia and a strong relationship with Fiji. He stated that collaborating on the alliance aligns with efforts to enhance regional safety.

The Ocean of Peace Alliance is a mutual defence treaty aimed at facilitating cooperation and consultation among its members to tackle common threats. The agreement allows for other Pacific states to join, contingent upon approval from Australia and Fiji.

Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters noted that Pacific leaders have historically favoured Pacific-led responses to security issues. He emphasised that formalising the relationship with Australia and Fiji would further strengthen New Zealand's ties with Pacific nations.
