Govt Allocates $50,000 to Support Flood-Affected Farmers

The Government is providing $50,000 to assist farmers affected by recent flooding in Kaikōura. This funding will be matched by Federated Farmers through their fundraising efforts.

Kaikōura experienced double its average rainfall over two days, causing significant flooding and slips that damaged farms, livestock feed, and critical infrastructure like roads and fences. Agriculture Minister Todd McClay emphasised the importance of animal welfare during this crisis.

Staff from the Ministry for Primary Industries are actively working with farmers, industry groups, and the Rural Support Trust to relocate around 4,000 animals from flood-affected areas to safer grazing lands. McClay noted that farmers in other regions, including Otago and the Wairarapa, are also dealing with the aftermath of severe weather.

He advised farmers to monitor MetService forecasts closely and take necessary precautions, such as moving livestock to safe ground. For assistance, farmers are encouraged to contact the Rural Support Trust or MPI for animal welfare concerns.
