Construction Begins on Pepe Stream Bridge Replacement

Full construction on the replacement of the Pepe Stream Bridge on State Highway 25 is set to begin next week. Transport Minister Chris Bishop announced the transition from enabling works to major construction.

Enabling works started in May 2026, which included building a temporary footbridge and relocating essential services. The old footbridge will be demolished to allow for the construction of the first lane of the new bridge, which will feature a shared path.

By early next year, traffic will be switched onto the new lane, facilitating the demolition of the existing 83-year-old bridge. This will pave the way for the construction of the second lane of the new bridge.

Minister Bishop acknowledged the challenges faced by local traffic, especially during peak summer months. He highlighted the importance of accessibility for the local tourism industry and expressed gratitude to Coromandel MP Hon Scott Simpson for his advocacy regarding this crucial bridge replacement.
