South Island's First Rural Training Hub Heads to West Coast

Exciting news for rural New Zealand — the South Island is getting its very first Rural Training Hub, and the West Coast is leading the way. Associate Health Minister Matt Doocey announced the milestone initiative on 6 June 2026, signalling a genuine commitment to bringing quality healthcare closer to the one in five Kiwis who call rural communities home.

The new Rural Training Hub will work to build a sustainable pipeline of doctors, nurses, and midwives specifically trained and supported to work in rural settings. For too long, rural communities across Aotearoa have faced real challenges in attracting and retaining healthcare workers — this hub is designed to change that, creating pathways that make rural medicine not just viable, but an appealing and rewarding career choice.

Associate Health Minister Matt Doocey says the initiative reflects the Government's focus on fixing the basics and building a better future for rural New Zealanders. "Kiwis should have access to timely, quality care wherever they live and that's exactly what we are focused on delivering," Mr Doocey says. It's a straightforward but powerful principle — your postcode shouldn't determine the quality of care you receive.

The West Coast, known for its stunning landscapes and tight-knit communities, has long faced healthcare staffing pressures common to many rural regions. Having a dedicated training hub on the ground means aspiring health professionals can train in the environment where they're most needed, building local connections and a genuine sense of place that makes them more likely to stay long-term.

This announcement is a meaningful step forward for rural health equity across New Zealand. With more hubs potentially on the horizon, communities throughout the motu — from Northland to Southland — can look forward to a future where world-class healthcare is within reach, no matter how far from the city you live.
