Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park Landfills Cleaned Up

One of New Zealand's most iconic natural treasures has taken a major step toward full restoration, with the completion of a $3.32 million remediation project at Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. Two former landfill sites that had accumulated decades of waste have now been fully cleaned up, marking a proud moment for conservation in Aotearoa.

Environment Minister Nicola Grigg and Conservation Minister Tama Potaka announced this week that the remediation project — jointly funded by the Department of Conservation and the Ministry for the Environment — has been completed. Each agency contributed $1.66 million to the effort, reflecting a strong commitment from the government to protecting our most precious landscapes for future generations.

Workers removed approximately 2500 cubic metres of waste from the two sites, located around 3km from Aoraki/Mount Cook Village. The landfills had been in use between 1950 and 1980, a different era in waste management, and their legacy had lingered in the heart of the national park for far too long. The clean-up represents a meaningful righting of past wrongs in one of New Zealand's most breathtaking environments.

The urgency of the project was underscored by flooding in 2022, when waste from one of the landfills spilled into the nearby Hooker Valley area, highlighting the environmental risk these sites posed to the surrounding waterways and ecosystems. That event galvanised action and helped accelerate the remediation effort to protect the park's rivers and wildlife.

The completion of this project is a wonderful reminder that with investment and collaboration, we can undo historical damage to our natural environment. Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to New Zealand's highest peaks — deserves nothing less than the best protection we can offer, and this milestone brings us meaningfully closer to that goal.
