Katikati Shipping Container Terminal Moves to Hamilton
A shipping container terminal at the northern entrance to Katikati, which many locals branded an eyesore, has ceased operations and will relocate to a purpose-built site in Hamilton. The company's spokesperson said the move was driven primarily by concerns over recent extreme weather events that closed key roads to Auckland and Tauranga, rather than community pressure — though significant backlash had come from nearby residents over noise, dust and increased container truck traffic through town.
The business said it had invested at least half a million dollars into the local economy over nine months, employing local truck drivers and supporting vehicle service businesses. Several of those drivers will lose work when the company departs, and the spokesperson described the move as an economic loss for the area. Western Bay of Plenty District Council received 20 complaints about the site between November 2025 and the end of April 2026, though noise monitoring carried out in March found no breaches of permitted limits.
Current landowner Thor Hein confirmed the site will be repurposed into self-storage for boats, campervans and caravans, with upgrades including new fencing, fresh paint and a general tidy-up planned before it reopens. The company's lease on the site ends in July. Ward councillors Rodney Joyce and Allan Sole both acknowledged the mixed feelings in the community — recognising the employment benefits while noting that neighbours would be relieved to see the operation go.
