New Māori Knowledge Exhibit at Western Bay Museum

A unique exhibition at Western Bay Museum invites visitors to recover traditional Māori knowledge through the sacred toki tool. This first-of-its-kind display aims to educate attendees from a Māori perspective.

The exhibition, titled Toki – the edge of tradition, showcases the history and significance of toki, or adzes, in Māori culture. Led by Hingangaroa Smith, the exhibit emphasizes the restoration of mana to these historic tools, spotlighting their use in various cultural practices.

Complementing the display are interactive features and historical images from Te Papa. Visitors can engage with the toki's construction process and learn about its vital role in shaping Māori infrastructure and identity. The exhibition runs for two months, encouraging community participation and understanding.
