3D illusion and ceramic art on show at Katikati's Carlton Gallery
Two exhibitions by local and regional artists are on display at the Carlton Gallery inside The Arts Junction in Katikati until 22 March. The first features the work of Ōmokoroa-based painter John Wilson, who has spent more than four decades developing a reverse-perspective painting technique that makes surfaces appear to shift and move as the viewer changes position. Arts coordinator Monita Marescalchi described the experience as immersive and disorienting, noting that Wilson's work has been widely exhibited in the United Kingdom through Castle Galleries and at venues including the Bluecoat Arts Centre in London.
Alongside Wilson's paintings, the gallery is also showing the ceramic work of Waihi artist Bridget Boot, who operates a small studio practice called Black Shed Pottery. Originally from the UK, Boot has worked with clay for more than 30 years. Her pieces embrace the tactile, imperfect qualities of handmade ceramics and reflect a philosophy that values individuality and quiet authenticity, according to Marescalchi.
The Carlton Gallery is open Monday to Friday 9am–3pm and Saturday to Sunday 10am–2pm. More information is available at www.theartsjunction.org.nz/carlton-gallery.
