Ōmokoroa 'have-a-go' try-athlon opens to young tamariki

Sixty-five children from nine Bay of Plenty schools have already signed up for this year's 'have-a-go try-athlon' at the Ōmokoroa Domain, with the event set for 21 March starting at 9am. Hosted by Pahoiā School, the multisport event is open to children aged five to 13 and is deliberately designed to welcome those who have never attempted anything like it before.

Pahoiā School deputy principal Helen Maxey said the aim is to make the experience as accessible as possible — from children still on trainer wheels through to those who have been cycling for years. The swim leg is described as a relaxed splash through the water, while cycling and run distances vary by age group, with older children tackling the hill in Ōmokoroa before returning for the final run.

Horticulture business Apata, which has packhouse and coolstore facilities in Te Puke, Katikati, and Paengaroa, is the major sponsor. Maxey praised the company's involvement last year, noting that every participant received a medal and the event had a warm family atmosphere. Older students who finish early are encouraged to run alongside and support the younger tamariki.

The event is a fundraiser for Pahoiā School, with proceeds going towards projects such as a junior adventure playground. Entry costs $30 per person, with food, drinks, and raffle prizes including Snowplanet family passes on offer. Early bird registrations close on 18 March, with late registrations available on the day.
