Katikati Businesses Rally After Uretara River Spills onto SH2

The Uretara River rose steadily through the night of 21 January, eventually spilling floodwater over State Highway 2 near Kotahi Lane and inundating nearby Katikati businesses. Bridgestone Tyre Centre owner Logan Roche said water began entering his leased premises at the corner of SH2 and Kotahi Lane around 10pm. By 1am the flooding was at its deepest — just under knee height. Staff had prepared in advance by hoisting expensive machinery out of harm's way, but the water still damaged fridges, cabinetry, office furniture, paperwork, loose tools, and stock. Roche planned to claim insurance for the losses.

Across SH2, The Veggie Hub owner Karin du Plessis said floodwater entered her store near 11pm on 21 January, despite the building owner having previously raised the shop floor to reduce flood risk. The packaging room was completely flooded, though no stock was damaged and the chiller kept working throughout. Thanks to staff coming in early to clean up, the store was able to reopen by 8am on 22 January.

The community response was a highlight for both business owners. Roche said people started arriving to help from 6am, bringing food, fans, dehumidifiers, and squeegees, making it possible for Bridgestone to reopen by Friday 23 January. Du Plessis echoed the sentiment, saying it had been a massive effort and expressing gratitude to everyone who pitched in.
