Banded Rail Spotted Thanks to Volunteer Efforts in Katikati

Volunteers working on predator control along Katikati's Beach Rd coastal walkway recently celebrated a significant achievement. A juvenile Banded rail was spotted, marking a positive change in local wildlife.

Sharon Strong from Renaturing Katikati shared the news, noting that this is the first sighting of a Banded rail in the area. Volunteers have worked hard to restore the habitat, and this sighting is a testament to their efforts.

The Banded rail, known for its preference for saltmarshes and mangroves, is classified as 'at risk' by the Department of Conservation. Keeping dogs on a lead near the sighting area will help protect this valuable species.

Renaturing Katikati continues to seek additional volunteers for further predator control work.
