Banded rail spotted near Katikati's Beach Rd coastal walkway

Volunteers who have been carrying out predator control work around Katikati's Beach Road coastal walkway for more than four years have been delighted by a recent sighting of a banded rail — a secretive native bird rarely seen in the open. One volunteer had disturbed what he believed was a banded rail near his traps some months earlier, and his hunch was later confirmed when a juvenile bird was spotted in the area.

Later the same day, a member of the public independently spotted an adult banded rail nearby, providing further evidence that the birds are establishing a presence along the walkway corridor. The sightings are seen as an encouraging sign that the sustained predator trapping effort is helping native wildlife return to the area.
