Dave Hume Pool set to reopen December 17 after major revamp

Katikati's Dave Hume Heated Pool is on track to reopen on Wednesday, 17 December, following a significant upgrade project aimed at expanding learn-to-swim opportunities, improving accessibility and extending the seasonal operating period from September through to the end of May each year.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council awarded the pool service delivery contract to Bay Venues — a Tauranga City Council-owned Council Controlled Organisation — back in September, covering both Dave Hume Pool and Te Puke Memorial Pool. The contract runs for four years with a potential two-year performance-based extension. Bay Venues will handle day-to-day operations and maintenance, while the council retains responsibility for capital works.

Key improvements include the installation of a bulkhead in the original 33.3-metre pool to create a 25-metre lap pool and a separate 7-metre learn-to-swim pool; new PVC pool liners across all three pools replacing the previous painted surfaces; upgraded sand filtration systems; a disability hoist in the main pool; heated and insulated changing rooms and reception; and a new outdoor gym. The existing bore-water heat exchanger was also upgraded to keep the learn-to-swim pool at a warmer temperature.

Swim admission for the upcoming season is $5.50 for adults (16 and over), $4 for seniors (65-plus) and children aged 5–15, $2 for toddlers aged 2–4, and $15 for a family pass. A 10-visit pass is available from $35. Full pricing and booking details can be found at www.davehumepool.co.nz, where Bay Swim lessons for Term 1 will also open for bookings soon.
