Local Teen's Balloon Sculpting Business Blowing Up Around Te Puke
Kieran Groves, a 14-year-old entrepreneur from Rotorua with family in Te Puke, has built a growing balloon sculpting business called BalloonO'Mania. Starting at just 10 years old, Kieran has become a recognisable face around the Te Puke district, appearing at numerous local events including the Epic Te Puke Treat Trail, Paengaroa Spring Fair, Fairhaven School gala and fireworks, Te Puke Gymsport's open day, and the Sirens and Services Koha Ice Cream Day.
Kieran's entrepreneurial journey began unexpectedly at St Mary's School in Rotorua, where he started selling bracelets before being asked to stop when students were using lunch money to purchase them. With leftover stock, he began attending car boot sales. "My grandma recommended I start selling balloons on the side, and after that the balloons slowly took over," he explained. The balloon sculpting side of the business grew from there, with his grandmother's suggestion sparking the transition to his now-popular craft.
With bookings for Christmas in the Park next month and the Te Puke A&P Show in February, Kieran has something scheduled on almost every weekend of summer. He has also secured party bookings throughout the season. When asked about his designs, Kieran noted, "There are heaps of different designs and they are pretty simple and fast to make," though he acknowledged the skill required. He remains uncertain about expanding the business further but is focused on improving his craft and service.
