Katikati Lions' Lone Diners Luncheon Feeds 130 Seniors

Around 130 people gathered at the Katikati War Memorial Hall on a Sunday in October for the annual Lions' Lone Diners Luncheon, a beloved community event offering a traditional roast meal and good company to older residents of the district. Organised by the Katikati Lions Club, the event saw nine Katikati Leos assist with serving food and drinks, while 30 Lions members and eight volunteers worked the hall kitchen to prepare the meal.

Katikati Lion Dave Eddy traced the luncheon's origins back to 1978, when it was first held at St Peter's Anglican Church hall with roughly 20 guests. The idea came from a new club member, Albie Hall, who had seen something similar run in Matamata. After strong early feedback, the Lions kept the tradition going each year — making this year's event approximately the 40th instalment, accounting for a brief pause during the Covid-19 pandemic.
