17 Tonnes of Windfall Avocados Rescued in Katikati

In the aftermath of severe winds, Good Neighbour has turned a disaster for avocado growers into a chance for local communities to receive fresh produce. Over 17 tonnes of avocados were collected and redistributed across the North Island.

Following the significant damage to avocado orchards during the recent storms, Good Neighbour launched a recovery effort that lasted 12 days. Volunteers gathered fruit from 17 orchards, which had fallen due to gale-force winds, and delivered them to families in need, spanning from Kaitaia to Wellington.

Renee Hanna, the general manager, expressed pride in the work done by the volunteers. 'Avocados are a luxury for those we serve,' she said, highlighting the joy of providing such a nutritious fruit to families struggling to meet their basic needs.
