Principal Craig Haggo Retires After 25 Years Leading Pongakawa School
Craig Haggo has retired as principal of Pongakawa School after 25 years of service, following medical advice to prioritize his health. His doctor warned that delaying retirement could lead to difficult later life, as seen in other principals. Although Haggo had originally intended to stay another year and still felt effective in his role, an overseas trip earlier this year revealed how exhausted he had become.
While the announcement surprised some in the community, Haggo had been discussing succession plans with board chair Lachie McKenzie. Despite taking a break earlier in the year, the fatigue persisted, leading him to acknowledge it was time to step down. He feels at peace with the decision and is confident the school is in a strong position for his successor.
