Designer bathroom makeover showcases moody, textural style
A Katikati-area bathroom has been given a dramatic transformation by designer Natalie DuBois of DuBois Design, who was commissioned to create a more intimate and atmospheric space specifically for the homeowners' overnight guests. The clients felt their previous bathroom had been too light and sparse, and wanted something with a moodier, more layered feel.
Working around existing concrete floors and walls that limited plumbing changes, DuBois drew on a rich material palette featuring dark burnished metal-look porcelain tiles alongside lighter grey rock-salt porcelain tiles. These flow from the hallway into the bathroom and continue up the back wall, giving the space a cohesive, enveloping quality.
The freestanding bath sits against a wall clad in tumbled natural stone, with a long recessed shelving niche behind it. Curved mirrors, tapware, and fixtures were deliberately chosen to complement one another, while smoked bronze lighting and door hardware tie in with gunmetal tapware throughout. A two-metre run of deep storage drawers floats above the floor, adding both practicality and a sense of visual lightness.
