Western Bay Council Election: Voting Packs Out from 9 September
Residents across the Western Bay of Plenty and Bay of Plenty regions will receive voting packs in the post from 9 September, with voting closing at midday on 11 October. Electoral officials suggest posting completed voting forms by 7 October to ensure they arrive in time.
Western Bay of Plenty District Council uses the First Past the Post (FPP) system, meaning voters simply choose the candidate they most want in each category — whoever receives the most votes wins. Most residents will be voting for a Mayor, their ward councillor or councillors, and their community board representatives. Residents of Matakana and Rangiwaea Islands will vote for a mayor and ward councillors only, as they fall outside a community board area.
Electoral officer Warwick Lampp confirmed that all wards, boards, and board subdivisions had enough candidates to proceed to a contest — though one exception applies. If Manvir Singh Mann were to win the councillor seat he is also contesting, a by-election would be held to fill his Eastern seat on the Te Puke-East Community Board.
Council chief executive Tony Groom encouraged people to take time to learn about the candidates before casting their vote. "This is your chance to influence who sits around the table," he said. An interactive map showing nearby post boxes and voting drop-off points — including supermarkets, council offices, and libraries — will be available on the council website closer to packs being sent out.
