Katikati Lions Collect Can Tabs to Support Kidney Kids NZ

The Katikati Lions Club is encouraging locals to hold onto the pull tabs from their canned drinks as part of its Kidney Kan Tab Initiative, which raises money for the Kidney Kids Support Group of New Zealand. The group supports children living with kidney disease who require dialysis, and the funds generated help make difficult days a little easier for those tamariki and their whānau.

Around 3,600 tabs make up a kilogram, and once collected they are recycled with the proceeds directed to Kidney Kids. Jo Hurne from the Katikati Lions said even small acts — like pocketing a tab and dropping it into a collection can — can collectively make a meaningful difference in a sick child's life.

The initiative has already inspired others to get involved. A group of men from Waihī Beach not only collected tabs but also held a sweepstake guessing how many tabs were in a jar, raising an additional $300. Anyone wishing to contribute can drop off Kan Tabs and wine caps at Barfoot & Thompson Waihī Beach, or contact Jo Hurne directly on 027 291 1440.
