Matahui School Fights to Stay Open After Funding Rejections

Matahui School, an independent primary school near Katikati, is under threat following the rejection of its applications for charter or state-sponsored status. The school, which serves a unique student body, is now relying on donations to remain operational.

Currently, the school has 49 students and focuses on holistic education tailored to both neurodiverse and neurotypical learners. Principal Mary Woods voiced concerns that the current funding model inadequately supports the needs of those with learning disabilities.

As the board explores long-term solutions, they continue to advocate for reforms that provide better funding for neurodiverse education. Community backing will be crucial as they navigate these challenges.
