Katikati Fire Brigade Opens Doors to Recruit New Volunteers

Katikati Volunteer Fire Brigade is holding a family open day on Saturday 29 March to give the public a chance to learn about the brigade and consider signing up. Deputy chief Craig Gray says there are plenty of people in the community who would make capable firefighters but simply haven't had the opportunity to find out what's involved.

The brigade is seeking volunteers across a range of roles — not just frontline firefighters, but also operational support members who help keep the service running. Gray acknowledges that recruitment has become harder as people lead busier lives, but stresses the personal rewards are significant. "It teaches you a lot of life skills, it's a good confidence-builder and you gain a new skill set that will serve you for the rest of your life," he said.

The day's programme includes a 'jaws of life' demonstration, station tours, virtual reality headsets showing how rapidly fire spreads, a water demonstration, fire trucks on display, and a free barbecue. Gray also noted the value of children meeting firefighters in full gear, so they are not frightened of them in an emergency.

The open day runs from 9am to 3pm at the Katikati Fire Brigade station, 15 Sheffield St. Anyone wanting more information about joining can phone 0274 144 524.
