Waihi Launches 111 Challenge to Fund New Ambulance Station
Hato Hone St John is calling on Waihi locals to take part in a community fundraising drive — the Waihi 111 Challenge — with the goal of raising $111,000 towards a new ambulance station in the township. Construction of the new station on Johnston Street began in January and is on track to be completed by mid-year, replacing a 1970s building that no longer met modern earthquake standards.
While the new station is being built, all Waihi ambulance operations have temporarily shifted to 32 Haszard Street. Hato Hone St John group operations manager Julia Te Huia said the new facility would serve the people of Waihi and the surrounding district for many years to come, and that local volunteers deserved better-suited premises.
Waihi HHStJ Area Committee chairwoman Kris Purden has kicked off the challenge by pledging to bake 111 muffins throughout March, with the first batch delivered to construction workers on site. The 111 Challenge invites participants to set themselves a goal incorporating the number 111 — such as running or walking 111 kilometres during March, completing 111 daily push-ups, or swimming 111 pool laps. Those keen to take part can set up a fundraising page at the Hato Hone St John website.
