Temporary Roundabout Marks Milestone in Ōmokoroa SH2 Upgrade

A temporary roundabout at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Ōmokoroa Road went into place overnight on Thursday 6 March, ahead of a formal opening on Friday 7 March. The temporary layout is a scaled-down version of the final design, intended to give drivers a preview of what's coming while improving safety during construction.

Drivers travelling through the site can expect intermittent Stop/Go controls during off-peak hours, contraflow conditions, and lane changes as work progresses. Infrastructure growth and delivery manager Annelie Badenhorst reminded motorists to be patient with crews on the ground, noting that clear signage and reduced speed limits would be in place throughout.

The full intersection upgrade is regarded as a minimum 10-year interim solution to address growing traffic demands at Ōmokoroa, with a complete interchange planned once funding allows. Construction is expected to be finished by mid-2026, at which point the community will have a significantly safer and more capable road layout serving the rapidly growing Ōmokoroa area.
