Free Cybersecurity Seminar to Help Protect Te Puke from Online Scams
A free cybersecurity awareness seminar is being held in Te Puke this month to help residents protect themselves from online scams. The Cyber Security Awareness: Scam and Fraud Seminar, hosted by Western Bay of Plenty District Council in collaboration with Tū Mai Digital, will be held at the Settlers Lounge on Thursday, March 20, from 10am until noon.
Guest speakers include IT specialists, bank managers and private contractors who will give easy-to-follow presentations on cybersecurity awareness, banking, investment and romance scams, credential harvesting, passwords and fraud. Following the presentations, there will be light refreshments and the opportunity to meet the experts and ask questions. "Scammers have always been with us, but they are becoming more sophisticated," said the district council's community digital support assistant Tracy Silver. "Although we can't stop them, there are things we can do to protect ourselves." Similar events in Katikati and Ōmokoroa have proved popular with up to 60 people attending.
