Young Katikati Rider Takes Show Hunter Honours at A&P Show
Sixteen-year-old Heleina Jones has made a striking impression at the 100th Katikati A&P Show, claiming the highest points total across all show hunter categories in her debut at the annual event. She competed against around 40 experienced riders across three classes — 80 cm, 90 cm and one metre — riding her horse Finding Nemo (known around the stables as Archie), the least experienced of her three horses.
Jones took home ribbons and $1,200 in prize money, which she plans to put towards buying her first car. Show hunter is judged on the overall quality and smoothness of jumping style, with horse and rider assessed throughout their entire round rather than just on whether fences are cleared. Jones described the discipline as more technical than regular show jumping, requiring correct striding, proper leads and a consistent rhythm — all while making it look effortless.
Adding a special family dimension to the day, her mother Lori Clarke — a seasoned show jumper herself — came out of retirement to compete in the 80 cm class alongside her daughter as part of the centenary show. Jones has been riding since she was very young and has competed nationally over the past two years. Looking beyond the arena, she has her sights set on obtaining a pilot's licence in the future.
