Affordable Senior Housing Build Begins in Katikati

Construction has got under way at 3 Wills Road, Katikati, where Abbeyfield Western Bay of Plenty is developing an affordable housing complex for older New Zealanders. Iline Construction broke ground on 17 February, with the project expected to reach completion by the end of 2025.

The Katikati house will be the 16th Abbeyfield home in New Zealand, providing 14 seniors with ensuite studio accommodation, cooked meals and companionship in a flat-style living arrangement. Chairperson Carole Parker described the moment as an "incredible feeling of satisfaction and relief" after the committee spent five years fundraising to reach their goal of more than $3 million, assisted by a Ministry of Housing and Urban Development affordable housing fund grant.

Around $100,000 in fundraising is still needed to complete the build, and further events are planned throughout 2025 — including a 'paint and name a studio door' opportunity for $2,000. Seniors aged 65 and over interested in living at the house can contact applications officer Isabel Ford on 027 351 3444 or email abbeyfieldwbopapplications@gmail.com. Those wishing to contribute to funding can reach the team at fundabbeyfieldwbop@gmail.com.
