Abbeyfield Affordable Housing Build Kicks Off in Katikati

Excavation has begun at the Abbeyfield Western Bay of Plenty site on Wills Road in Katikati, marking a significant milestone after years of fundraising effort. The committee expressed delight at finally seeing machinery on site, though a funding shortfall of $150,000 still remains before the project is complete.

The team reached the $3 million fundraising mark last year and has organised a fresh push for 2025, with the goal of opening the house by year's end. Abbeyfield homes across Aotearoa provide affordable rental accommodation for people aged 65 and over who have limited financial means.

A number of fundraising events are planned to close the gap. These include an afternoon tea with Kiwi fashion designer and social entrepreneur Annah Stretton at Katikati Bowling Club on 16 March ($40 tickets), and a Claymark Ambrose Golf Tournament at Waihi Golf Course on 4 April ($200 per team). Donors who contribute $2,000 can also sponsor an internal door and choose its colour and name, with just seven of the original 14 doors still available. Garden stakes painted by Katikati artists — three remaining — can be sponsored for $5,000. Enquiries can be sent to fundabbeyfieldwbop@gmail.com.
